What is Panchakarma ?

Panchakarma in Sanskrit stands for “five procedures” or “five treatments”. The concept of Panchakarma is rooted in the science of Ayurveda and is related to integrating human constitutions (prakruthi) with our collective consciousness. Panchakarma is often known as the method of ultimate cleanse – or complete mind and body detoxification – which strengthens the human immune system and restores its balance and well-being.

The human body, in its natural state, has the ability to process and remove toxins or doshas processed as a result of various external and internal activities. However, poor diet management, lack of exercise, degenerative lifestyle habits and genetic conditions can mess up the body’s ability to maintain its internal homeostasis. If the body is not cleansed, waste matter or “ama” can accumulate. Ama is a foul-smelling, sticky, harmful substance that needs to be completely evacuated from the body.

Panchakarma will remove the excess doshas and ama through the body’s own organs and excretory channels such as colon, sweat glands, lungs, urinary bladder, intestines, etc.

Panchakarma Packages at Ayurmayi

At Ayurmayi, Panchakarma is considered as a highly individualized procedure customized based on the needs of an individual and his Ayurvedic prakriti, doshic imbalances, age and health conditions. The therapy begins with an initial consultation with an Ayurvedic Physician who determines and records the patient’s Ayurvedic prakriti and health condition. Depending on his conclusions, all or parts of the “five procedures” are administered. It is a very pleasurable procedure that lowers metabolic activity and allows the body and mind to drop into a profound level of peacefulness.

The procedure involves:

  • Warm herbal oil massage (Abhyanga)
  • Pouring of herbalized oil over the forehead (Shirodhara)
  • Herbal steam bath (Swedana)
  • Lymphatic massage (Udvartana)
  • Herbal enemas (Basti)
  • Nasal administrations (Nasya)

In the advanced stages of your Panchakarma therapies, you will be given a special ayurvedic diet routine mixed with specific medicinal plants and basic oils to use at home.
